history

Main entrance (2017)

The company was founded in 1989.

Derby Airport used to be located at Burnaston. Burnaston prevailed against six other possible locations in the UK. In return for the commitment, the A50 was expanded.

£ 650 million has been put into building the factory. The Burnaston plant has an area of 2,350,000 square meters and has its own test track. The plant's visitor center is called Burnaston Hall , reminiscent of the building that had to give way for the factory. By 2019, Toyota had invested £ 2.75 billion in this plant.

Production started in December 1992. One of the previous managing directors of TMUK was Hein Van Gerwen , who was also a goalkeeper at the Dutch football club PSV Eindhoven .

While only four vehicles were produced in the first shift at the end of 1992, in 2017 it was around 600 vehicles per day. In 2011, for example, 128,000 vehicles and 130,000 engines were manufactured. More than four million vehicles were produced in Burnaston by 2017. This mark was reached in 2018 at the Deeside engine plant.

According to its own statement from 2018, 85% of production is exported to European markets.

Models

In August 1992, the first engines (E 4A) were manufactured in Deeside, and in December 1992 the first Carina E rolled off the assembly line in Burnaston. This first vehicle was never sold and is now in the British Motor Museum . After the Carina, the Avensis was installed from October 1997 . In September 1998 the Corolla was added, which was replaced by the Auris in February 2007 . Production of the Auris Hybrid started in June 2010. This made TMUK the first Toxota plant outside of Japan to produce hybrid vehicles.

Production of the Avensis in Great Britain ended in 2018. A total of 1,936,572 copies were made. Since then only one model (Auris) has been made.

Production of the new Corolla began in January 2019 .
