Nature reserve |
The Tröndelsee is a lake in the city of Kiel , which, together with its surroundings , was placed under nature protection in 1983 as " Tröndelsee and surroundings " as the first area of the city.
The lake is surrounded by wet meadows, alder quarries and some pastures that are grazed by robust cattle to maintain the landscape.
The natural silting process of the Tröndelsee increased sharply in the last century due to nutrient inputs, as untreated sewage was discharged for a long time. Two thirds of the original water area still exist today, so that the lake is now only 24 hectares in size.
ecology
The lake is the habitat of many water bird species such as water rail , great crested grebe and red-necked grebe, as well as tufted duck and teal . The adjacent wet meadows are the location of many species of small sedge and orchids .
