The Trübler is a Swiss variety of the pear ( Pyrus communis ).

Synonyms

Synonyms for the cloudy pear are Schutzibirne, Bienenbirne, Immenbirne, Kugelbirne and Kugelibirne (Chugelibire). The variety is named Trübler because the small fruits in grapes (dialect: Truube , dim. Trüübli ) are connected.

Origin and Distribution

The variety is mainly found in the higher elevations of the Swiss cantons of Zurich , Thurgau , St. Gallen and Appenzell, but also in Liechtenstein . The oldest trees of the Trübler can be found in the Sarganserland (Canton St. Gallen). There are also scattered occurrences on the left bank of Lake Zurich , where it is also called Kugelibire (Attention: Kugelibire is a collective term and is used in particular for the Swiss roast pear.)

tree

The variety is suitable as a standard and grows medium to strong. It grows upright and forms a dense tangle of thick branches. The tree begins to grow very late. It blooms many days before the leaves become visible. Since all the surrounding trees are already completely green, the tree looks dead every spring. The bloom is spectacular. As soon as it sets in, the tree turns into a starry sky with a black background. The tree is extremely lazy in the first few years.

fruit

The pear is small, spherical, has a short stem and a rough skin. The lower third of the fruit is completely rusty, which makes it appear ocher-colored in sunlight when fully ripe. The basic color is white-green to yellow-green, the lenticels stand out clearly. The meat is yellowish, firm, coarse-grained, juicy and has a sweet, aromatic taste.

use

Due to its small size, the pear is particularly suitable for specialties. It can be used in many ways. It used to be used in many places to make pear syrup. It makes an excellent distillate. Peeled, it can be preserved in jars as a whole fruit. First peeled, then put with the stem in schnapps and then coated with dark chocolate, the small fruit is a rare delicacy. Although it looks more like a cider pear, the pear can also be eaten that way.

Harvest time and storage

The fruits are harvested in late September to early December. They become doughy quickly.

Diseases

The Trübler is an extremely robust variety. it is less susceptible to scab and hardly susceptible to fire blight.
