The Trachinotinae are a subfamily of the jacks (Carangidae) consisting of 21 species . It is composed of the two recent genera Lichia (1 species) and Trachinotus (20 species) and the extinct genus Paratrachinotus from the lower Eocene .

features

All types of the Trachinotinae are laterally strongly flattened, elongated ( Lichia ) or high back ( Trachinotus ) and covered with small cycloid scales. They are 34 ( Trachinotus stilbe ) to 122 cm ( Trachinotus falcatus ) long. The sideline is flaky. They have ten trunk vertebrae and 14 tail vertebrae. The anal fin is longer than the distance between the pelvic fins and the anal fin and usually just as long as the dorsal fin. The dorsal fin has 6 to 7 spines. The parts of the dorsal and anal fin, supported by hard fin rays, are elongated. The pectoral and pelvic fins are short. The caudal fin is forked. In the caudal fin skeleton there are 3 epuralia and hypuralia , which have fused together to form two bone plates. The premaxillary is mobile. A supramaxillary (jawbone) is missing. The number of Branchiostegal rays is seven to eight. The posterior section of the parasphenoid is greatly expanded.
