The Trafina Privatbank AG is the asset management specialist Swiss private bank based in Basel .
Its origins lie in Hansa AG . This was founded in 1930 as a finance company by Hans A. Opel and had the purpose of administering the funds that had accrued to him from the sale of the Opel plants. The company subsequently invested primarily in corporate finance, real estate and marketable securities.
In 1989, the asset management business was outsourced as an independent company under the name Trafina and converted into a bank in 1991 .
In 1999, Hansa AG sold a 30 percent stake in Sabine Dusmalé-Oeri, a descendant of Fritz Hoffmann-La Roche and co-owner of the pharmaceutical company Hoffmann-La Roche . In 2004, the private bank Baumann & Cie, Banquiers, also based in Basel, took over the majority of shares in Trafina Privatbank and currently holds 64 percent of the shares. The remainder is owned by Jean-Nicolas Fahrenberg (20%), Sabine Dusmalé-Oeri (10%) and the Sophie and Karl Binding Foundation (5%) founded by Hans A. Opel's widow . The two banks are legally independent, but work closely together in various areas, with individual areas of Trafina Privatbank being outsourced to Baumann & Cie, Banquiers. Trafina Privatbank has ten employees and manages around 1 billion Swiss francs in client assets.
