Tramea onusta has a total length of 41 to 48 mm, the abdomen is 28 to 34 mm long. The head is brown like the thorax . In males, the head turns red with age. The hind wings reach a length of 37 to 42 mm and, like the forewings, have reddish-brown veins in the area of ​​the base. The hind wings also have a brown band that usually does not extend beyond the middle of the anal loop . There is also a transparent stain in this band. It has twelve antecubital veins and nine postcubital veins . The legs are pale at the base and then darken. The abdomen is yellowish brown in young animals and becomes red with age in males. The segments eight to ten are laterally pale dorsal contrast black.
