Hagen , 1861

The genus Tramea is one of the nine dragonfly genera of the subfamily Pantalinae . The genus was established in 1861 by Hagen .

features

The genus Tramea is very close to the genus Pantala . Tramea differs from Pantala except in the slimmer shape and the general habitus by a shorter eye suture, the formation of the male genitalia , an unsplit lamina anterior , a knife-shaped hamulus , the large split egg valve of the females and a simple transverse suture on the third and fourth thorax ring .

behavior

The representatives of the genus Tramea have a steady high flight and rarely come under two meters altitude. When flying over water, the males are very aggressive towards other dragonflies, regardless of their species . This is mainly due to the fact that the animals primarily come to mate at watering holes. The pairing can take a long time. However, the female then flies alone to lay her eggs. When landing, aim for a horizontal orientation and places from which you have a good view. They often join representatives of the wandering dragonfly

Systematics

The genus Tramea includes 24 species. Ten of them are represented in the Neotropic
