Tramea calverti is a dragonfly - kind of genre tramea of the subfamily Panta Linae . The species is widespread mainly in southern Arizona , central and southern Texas , from where it occasionally strays along the east coast of the USA . It is also native to Mexico , the West Indies and from Central America to Argentina . The scientific name honors the American entomologist Philip Powell Calvert .

The T. calverti reaches a length of 44 to 49 millimeters, of which 30 to 33 millimeters are on the abdomen . The face is light yellow and turns red with age in males. The vertex , the point above between the complex eyes , is metallic orange. The thorax (arthropod) is brown with two hidden side lighter stripes. The hind wings reach a length of 37 to 42 millimeters. Except for a broad brown stripe in the hind wings, the wings are colorless. The legs get darker from the beginning to the end. In the adult males the abdomen is red, whereas in the females it is yellowish. Segments eight to ten are dorsally black.
