Tranent is a town in the Scottish council area of East Lothian . It is located about eleven kilometers west of Haddington and 15 kilometers east of central Edinburgh . In 2011 Tranent had 11,642 inhabitants.

history

Tranent developed with coal mining, which has been practiced in this place since the early 13th century. In the area, near-surface coal deposits can be found in seams up to two meters thick . In 1722 a horse field railway ( Waggonway Tranent – ​​Cockenzie ) was put into operation for the first time.

During the Second Jacobite Rising, the battle of Prestonpans took place in parts of the Tranent area . Prestonpans itself is only about a kilometer north. In 1797, the Militia Act introduced recruitment quotas. The Tranent massacre was followed by a bloody encounter between military units and a group of objectors.

With the whiskey distillery St. Clement's Wells Tranent was the location of an early distillery . It was founded by George Milne in 1786 and operated until 1833.

The A1 , which connects Edinburgh to Newcastle , runs directly north of Tranent. The nearest train station is in Prestonpans. It is regularly served by First ScotRail on the North Berwick Line .
