On July 23, 2014, an ATR 72 aircraft failed to land near Magong on the Penghu Islands on Formosa Strait . On board were 58 people, including 54 passengers and 4 crew members . 48 people were killed, 10 survived. There have been injuries among residents of Xixi Village .

Flight history

The launch from the Kaohsiung Airport to Airport Magong was at 16:00 local time ( UTC + 8 planned). Due to Typhoon Matmo , however, the plane did not take off until 17:43 local time.

At 7:05 p.m., the aircraft made to land in Magong. The aircraft approached far too low and was on the final approach 340 meters to the left of the approach baseline. When the pilot realized that the landing attempt failed, they launched nearly a kilometer before the runway in only 22 meters a go- one. Immediately thereafter, the machine collided with trees and hit 850 meters north of the runway in the village of Xixi, causing a fire that included two houses. The injured were taken to Tri-Service General Hospital in Magong.

Passengers and crew

The crew of the flight included the 60-year-old captain Lee Yi-liang and the 39-year-old co-pilot Chiang Kuan-hsing. Both pilots were killed in the crash. The master had 22,994 flight hours of flight experience, the copilot 2,392 flight hours.

There were 54 passengers on board, four of them children. The crew consisted of four people. 52 of the passengers and the four crew members were from Taiwan; In addition, there were two passengers of French origin among the passengers.

plane

The aircraft involved in the accident was an ATR 72-500 from the Franco-Italian aircraft manufacturer Avions de Transport Régional . The aircraft made its maiden flight on June 14, 2000 and had been in service for 14 years at the time of the accident. It was registered under the aircraft registration number B-22810 .

Investigation report on the causes of the crash

The investigation report by the Taiwanese aviation safety authority came to the conclusion that the captain and the copilot made numerous mistakes, as a result of which the aircraft missed the runway significantly on approach and led to a crash in a residential area. Coordination, communication and hazard management were "far from effective"; the prescribed flight procedures were repeatedly disregarded. The 60-year-old captain, a former military pilot, was also known by the chief pilot for risky flying.

Consequences of the crash

The airline TransAsia promised compensation to the relatives of the victims. For every inmate killed, their family is paid 200,000 TWD (equivalent to around 4,950 euros), plus a payment of 800,000 TWD (equivalent to around 19,800 euros) for the funeral.
