Trans Europe Halles (TEH) is a trans-European network of independent cultural centers.

aims

The TEH promote the sustainable development of non-governmental cultural centers across Europe. New initiatives should be encouraged to network, support one another and advertise for one another.

The TEH specifically aim to provide an infrastructure for the organizational and artistic exchange of their member centers. The maintenance and expansion of cultural institutions should also be promoted on a political level.

History and work

The Rote Fabrik in Zurich co-initiated the Trans Europe Halles in 1983

The Trans Europe Halls were founded in 1983 and are still committed to making old industrial complexes throughout Europe usable for art and culture.

In March 1983, the independent cultural center Les Halles de Schaerbeek in Brussels organized a meeting with independent cultural centers from all over Europe to exchange experiences and ideas. The meeting was entitled "Adventures of the rediscovered ark." The focus at the time was on making old industrial complexes usable for art and culture that were not state-subsidized.

Seven independent cultural centers took part in the meeting from which the Trans Europe Halles (TEH) emerged. These were: Halles de Schaerbeek (Brussels), Huset (Copenhagen), Kultur Fabrik (Koblenz), Melkweg ( Amsterdam ), Ny Scen (Götebourg), Pali Kao ( Paris ) and the Rote Fabrik ( Zurich ).

After this initial meeting, the work was expanded and the contact was kept. The members meet several times a year. In addition, the TEH coordinates international projects and training for its members. The arenite is u. a. Funded by the Swedish Ministry of Culture and the European Commission.

Members

A total of around 90 centers as associate or full members from all European countries are now part of the network. From Austria, Die Bäckerei (Innsbruck), the Brunnenpassage and the WUK (both Vienna) belong to the network. There is currently no member center in Switzerland as the Rote Fabrik is no longer an active part of the TEH. In Germany, the Alte Feuerwache (Cologne), HALLE 14 (Leipzig), the Kulturzentrum Schlachthof (Bremen), the Moritzbastei (Leipzig) and the ufaFabrik (Berlin) followed.
