Transatlantic Council

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Transatlantic Council of the Boy Scouts of America includes all American scout groups in Europe and the Mediterranean and is supported by the International Division manages the BSA. It was founded in May 1950 under the name EUCOM BSA Advisory Board to provide US citizens with a suitable, scouting service. Today, the membership is mainly composed of children of international business people, diplomats and military personnel . The seat is in Brussels.

history

There were smaller groups of American scouts in Europe soon after the BSA was founded. Until the founding of the Transatlantic Council, these groups were directly subordinate to the Direct Service . It was only with the increasing number of Americans in Europe that an independent structure was established. The structure of the districts is very changeable as it depends on political and economic movements.

structure

There are seven districts :

  • Mayflower District: England, Scotland, Ireland, Norway
  • Charlemagne District: Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, Germany (North Rhine-Westphalia), Denmark, France, Spain, Portugal, Morocco
  • Barbarossa District: Germany (Rhineland-Palatinate)
  • Rhinegold District: Germany (Baden-Württemberg), Switzerland (German-speaking Switzerland) (This district was only created in 2006 when the old Barbarossa District was split up.)
  • Edelweiss District: Germany (Hamburg, Hessen, Bavaria), Czech Republic
  • Mediterranean District: Italy
  • Horizon District: Poland, Austria, Hungary, Croatia, Greece, Turkey, Slovakia, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Switzerland (Geneva)

program

Basically the program is identical to that in the United States. However, differences arise from the fact that they live abroad and the great spatial distance between the individual groups (the Transatlantic Council is the largest in terms of area within the BSA and is located on three continents). This often leads to joint activities with other scout associations such as the Intercamp . In addition, the groups of the TAC are particularly strongly supported by the US military, embassies and schools.

The BSA's internal brotherhood of the Order of the Arrow is organized in the Transatlantic Council at Black Eagle Lodge 482 .

Special awards are given in the TAC u. a. awarded for walking certain hiking trails through historically important cities or areas (e.g. Heidelberg , Ardennes ).
