As translocases are proteins or protein complexes indicated that active at a translocation across a biological membrane are involved and, depending on specificity of the passage of atoms or molecules through the membrane or the separating within the membrane. They catalyze a transport reaction or a change of location and, as the ending - ase suggests, are understood as enzymes. Translocases are an independent enzyme class in the classification system of the enzyme commission of the International Union of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology with the EC numbers: 7.XXX
An example of a translocase is the TOM complex ( English translocase of the outer mitochondrial membrane ) of the mitochondrial outer membrane. This transmembrane transport protein complex catalyzes the transport of peptides or proteins between the cytosol and the mitochondrial cell compartment .
