Trappist-1 d , also known as 2MASS J23062928-0502285 d , is a presumably rocky exoplanet orbiting the dwarf star Trappist-1 just outside the habitable zone . It is located about 40 light years (12 parsecs ) from Earth in the constellation Aquarius .

Planet in the Trappist 1 system

Trappist-1 d is the third of seven from the star and with Trappist-1 h one of the two smallest known planets of the Trappist-1 system. Presumably all planets of the Trappist 1 system orbit the dwarf star in a bound rotation , in which one side of the planet is continuously illuminated by the star (perpetual day, warm) and the other side never (perpetual night, cold); in between is an annular zone with medium temperatures.

Trappist-1 d moves on an orbit with an orbit duration of about 4.05 days and an orbit radius of about 0.0214 astronomical units around the central star .

properties

Trappist-1 d is an earth-like planet . Its radius is about 0.772 earth radii and its mass about 0.41 earth masses . It has a slightly lower density than the earth, about 4.95 g / cm³, and a surface acceleration of about 6.79 m / s² (69% of the value of the earth). Its calculated equilibrium temperature is 288 K (15 ° C).

Habitability

The orbit of the exoplanet runs on the star side outside the habitable zone . According to model calculations, this planet experienced a galloping greenhouse effect (English runaway greenhouse effect ). H. its original oceans have probably evaporated. However, a small amount of water may still be present. It has an Earth Similarity Index of 0.90.

So far, nothing is known about the chemical composition and any atmosphere of the planet.
