The Trappist abbey Lilbosch (also: Abtei Echt ; Latin Abbatia Beatae Mariae de Sancto Joseph ) is a Dutch monastery in Echt, Echt-Susteren , Diocese of Roermond (not to be confused with the Carmelite Monastery of the Teresian Carmel ).

history

The Trappist Abbey Achel founded the daughter monastery Lilbosch (field name) in Echt (near today's German municipality Selfkant ) in 1883 , which was elevated to a priory in 1891 and an abbey in 1912 . The official name of the abbey was Abdij OL Vrouw van de H. Joseph (“Abbey of Our Lady of Saint Joseph”), but the place name has prevailed. The monks cleared the swampy area and lived from agriculture. In addition, they ran a high school (St. Bernardus College) with boarding school until 1942.

Foundation of Ockenheim

In 1921, Lilbosch monks settled on the Jakobsberg in Ockenheim (today: Jakobsberg Priory of the Mission Benedictines ) to look after a pilgrimage . Their commitment to pastoral care (which was unusual among the Trappists) prompted the order's leadership in 1930 to find a new location within five years. For the time being, political circumstances thwarted these efforts. The monastery, built after the Second World War, had to be abandoned in 1950 under pressure from the order's administration. The monks returned to Lilbosch or moved to Mariawald Abbey .

Lilbosch in the time of National Socialism

The Gestapo arrested Abbot Pius Strijbosch (1889–1954) in July 1942 and interned him in the Sint-Michielsgestel hostage camp until November 19, 1943 . In October 1942 the abbey was confiscated and the monks expelled. After the war, the monks returned and the damaged buildings were restored.

Takeover and closure of Tegelen Abbey

The Abbey of Abdij Ulingsheide (1888 priory, 1933 abbey), founded in 1884 by the Trappist Abbey Westmalle in Tegelen south of Venlo , joined Lilbosch Abbey in 2002 and was an annex monastery until 2007, when it was abandoned. The altar wine trade ("Wijnstekerij Uelingsheide") that began in Tegelen in 1898 was initially continued in Lilbosch, but was discontinued in 2015 in favor of concentrating on agriculture.
