The Trappist Paraíso is a since 1999 Ecuadorian monastery of Trappist monks in Latacunga , Cotopaxi province , diocese of Latacunga .

history

The Spanish Trappist Abbey of San Isidro de Dueñas (inspired by visits from Cardinal Pablo Muñoz Vega in 1978, Bishop Tomás Angel Romero Gross in 1989 and Monsignor Frumencio Escudero Arenas in 1996 and at the request of Cardinal Augusto Vargas Alzamora ) sent monks to the preliminary foundation in 1997 of a daughter monastery in the Ecuadorian Andean highlands . Bishop Raúl Holguer López Mayorga allowed the establishment of the first Catholic male monastery in Ecuador on May 9, 1997. In 1999, the Monasterio de Santa María del Paraíso was officially founded south of Latacunga in the canton of Salcedo at an altitude of 2900 m . Since then the superior of the monastery has been Jesús Penalva Carrillo.
