history

The monastery of San Isidro , consecrated to the early Christian saint Isidoros of Chios and first mentioned in a document in 911 , was probably founded in the 7th century by the Visigoths , but destroyed by the Moors in the 8th century. Already at the end of the 9th century the area was occupied by the Asturian King Alfons III. recaptured ( reconquista ) and repopulated ( repoblación ) ; The revival of the monastery by Mozarab monks is also attributed to him. In the 17th century, a new residential wing in the late Herrera style was built . In 1835 it fell victim to the dissolution of the monasteries ( desamortización ) , after which it was empty. The Spanish-born abbot Cándido Albalat y Puigcerver of the French Trappist monastery Désert near Toulouse had it successfully repopulated in 1891 by some of his monks. The monastery became a priory in 1897 and an abbey in 1900 .
