Trefilan Castle

Trefilan Castle ( Welsh Y Castell Trefilan ) is a former castle in Ceredigion in Wales . The castle site, protected as a Scheduled Monument , is next to the church in the village of Trefilan in the parish of Nantcwnlle.

history

Maelgwn ap Rhys , the Welsh Lord of Is Aeron in Ceredigion, began building the castle in the late 1220s and it was completed by his son Maelgwn Fychan around 1233 . It served as the residence of the Welsh Lords of Is Aeron. During Edward I's second campaign against Wales , an English army conquered the castle in September 1282, freed 18 prisoners and captured 3,000 cattle. The Welsh Lords Gruffydd and Cynan ap Maredudd narrowly escaped. The castle was burned down in the attack and was not mentioned afterwards.

The castle site is next to the Trefilan church and is freely accessible today.

investment

The castle was designed as a motte with a bailey . The mighty, oval castle hill is still preserved. It is 5.4 m high and is 15 by 12 m at the top. The castle hill had wooden fortifications and was surrounded by a moat. The 87 by 123 m large outer bailey, of which only small traces of the ground have survived, stretched southwest of the castle hill.
