Roberta Bergmann

Roberta Bergmann (* 1979 in Nordhausen ) is a German author and designer who specializes in book design and illustration .

Life

After graduating from high school, Bergmann began training as a design assistant for graphics and design in Halle (Saale) in 1998 . From 1999 to 2005 she studied communication design with a focus on book design and illustration at the Braunschweig University of Art .

Since 2001 she has published her own books or works as a freelance book designer, author and illustrator with publishers. In 2003 she founded the studio community "Tatendrang-Design" in Braunschweig together with four other designers and has since worked as an artist, illustrator and designer. From 2008 to 2012 Bergmann was a research assistant in the design department (design principles and design theory) at the University of Fine Arts in Braunschweig. From 2012 to 2014 she taught there as a visiting professor in the field of design, design principles in the communication design and industrial design courses . She has other teaching assignments and gives workshops, etc. a. in the fields of graphic design, artist editions, self-marketing and book design for non-designers. Bergmann also gives lectures for founders from the creative industries and gives workshops.

The Graphische Kunst - International Journal for Book Art and Graphics writes about Bergmann's book design and illustration for spring awakening , published on the occasion of Frank Wedekind's 150th birthday in 2014: “The illustrations by Roberta Bergmann bring the time of the text into account through the consistent implementation in a contemporary Art Nouveau style (...). ”The review also states that the book design and the pictures are designed according to a stage play and the inevitable impression is that the viewer is told something that only he should hear is thus made a confidante. And the reviewer sees this primarily in the "(...) illustrative art of the artist."

In 2016 Bergmann's first non-fiction book The Basics of Design was published .

Prices

In addition to smaller prizes such as the 1st prize for painting in 2004 at the 3rd Youth Art Biennale in Sondershausen, Bergmann won the “Vida Paper Design Award” in 2007 and 2008 together with Tonia Wiatrowski.

In 2012 Bergmann was awarded together with Tatendrang-Design 2012 as a culture and creative pilot in Germany 2012 by the initiative culture and creative industries of the federal government.

As a book designer and illustrator, she was nominated for the German Design Award 2015 for the book Spring Awakening and was also a finalist of the Europeen Design Award 2015.

In 2017 she was appointed by the Federal Government's initiative for culture and creative industries as an independent and honorary ambassador and multiplier from 2016-2019 as a Fellow of the Competence Center. In these three years, a strong network of around 100 people has emerged, which has been self-organized since 2020. There is still a close exchange of content between the network and the competence center. "
