Triangle offense

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The triangle offense is a basketball attack strategy. This emphasizes the formation of a "triangle" between three players who are each close to the basket, in the corner of the playing field and on the wing. This encourages passing play and player movement.

history

According to ESPN , the basis of this tactic was laid in the 1960s by Tex Winter , who defined the "Triangle Offense" in one of his coaching books. The tactic's breakthrough came in the 90s, when Phil Jackson won eleven NBA titles with the Chicago Bulls with Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen and later the Los Angeles Lakers with Shaquille O'Neal and Kobe Bryant . Also in women's basketball in the USA ( WNBA and college) many titles have been won with this tactic, in particular from Geno Auriemma (Connecticut Lady Huskies) and Pat Summitt (Tennessee Lady Vols), who led their teams to several NCAA titles.

description

The basis of the triangle offense is obviously a triangle formed by the center , a winger (forward) and a builder (guard). In the basic position, the center is in the so-called "low post" close to the basket, the builder in the corner of the field and the forward on the wing. The other two players stand on the other half of the playing field (i.e. if the three players mentioned at the beginning are on the left, the other two are on the right), form the "two man game" and expand the game. An important part of a triangle offense is the high amount of running and passing work, with which one tries to carry the game to the opposing baseline (i.e. the low post ). This strategy enables many throws close to the basket, and if the opponent aggressively defends the low post, the respective player can pass a colleague on the opposite side and give him a free throw from distance. Since the players often change their tactical position (e.g. if the point guard goes into the low post and the small forward becomes the ball distributor for a short time), this strategy requires versatile players with a high level of game intelligence.

Selection of possible moves

  • Circle : The starting player in the corner places a block and the winger runs around him at high speed on the outside of the circle. The opponent of the forward gets caught on the block and the winger can move to the basket.
  • Corner option : Two players from the triangle run into the corner and try to block the ball carrier. The latter can either throw or, in distress, pass one of the players facing away from the ball.
  • Isolation : The high player distance is used to isolate a defender in a 1-on-1 situation. This move was Michael Jordan's favorite move, and it excelled in these game situations.
  • Pop : Here the center is fitted close to the basket, which can either throw itself or play a "pop", i. H. one of his triangle colleagues can fit out for a throw.

Advantages and disadvantages

The triangle offense requires versatile players with high game intelligence who do a lot of running and blocking work without the ball. In addition, physically strong guards are required who can take litters in low post (i.e. usually in close cover). The role of the point guard is limited because both guards and possibly the small forward participate in distributing the ball. However, once this tactic is implemented, the team has a variety of tactical options. In particular, the triangle offense promotes the easiest ways on paper to score points: 1) a throw from the low post (i.e. close to the basket) and 2) a free throw from distance. Since a well-rehearsed triangle offense uses the entire width of the playing field, it is difficult for the opponent to concentrate on a single player.
