Tribe (internet)

Tribe or Digital Tribe (English for trunk ) is sharing a name for an unofficial group of people who share common interests, while loosely through social media or other Internet mechanisms are connected. The slang refers to the original name of tribe , which traditionally refers to people who are closely linked by geographic and genealogical conditions.

The concept is closely related to the concept of social networking and dates back to 2003, when the site tribe.net was launched by the science fiction author and internet activist Cory Doctorow . In 2004 Doctorow addressed the concept in his book Eastern Standard Tribe , which was published in Germany under the name Upload .

Analysis and identification of tribes are often heavily dependent on algorithms and techniques from statistical physics , computational biology, and network research .

According to a 2013 study by researchers at Royal Holloway and Princeton Universities, Twitter users not only have common interests, but also share potentially unconscious language features.
