Tribes of Caïn is a Swiss black metal band with distinctive death metal influences that was founded in 1999 in the greater Zurich area . The band name, an allusion to the biblical Cain and his descendants ( Genesis 4: 17-22, including Jubal , inventor of instrumental music , and Tubal-Kain , inventor of metallurgy ), symbolizes the fascination of the band members with "unconventional, free and not that Herd thinking of decayed individuals ”. The spelling Caïn [with trema (cf. heavy metal umlaut )] comes from the French language .

Tribes of Caïn is one of the best-known representatives of its genre in Switzerland and is under contract with the Fastbeast Entertainment label.

Band history

The band was founded in 1999 by Reto Hofstetter and Donato Campagna. Shortly afterwards, Inti Sanchez was hired as a drummer. In 2000 Campagna left the band to take a different musical path. The line-up was completed in the same year and the following year by Chrigi Sennhauser (guitar) and Sven Gryspeerdt (vocals) and Dario Khasham (bass). The first live performances followed. In 2002 two promo CDs were released.

The recordings for their first album The First Born in autumn 2002 were followed by a tour through Germany, Belgium and Spain in spring 2003. The post on bass was filled by Birgit Oellbrunner after the tour. Since the beginning of 2004 she played in the Norwegian-German folk metal band Midnattsol . A year after the release of The First Born , the band successfully completed the recordings on their second album, Supra Absurdum . Like the previous album, the CD was produced in-house. The session musician Richard Pechota was at the band's side for various appearances and for the recordings of Supra Absurdum . The second opus was favorably received by magazines and webzines and received good to excellent reviews. Both albums were included in the Swiss National Sound Archives in 2005.

The open position on bass was filled on July 16, 2004 by Kay Brem, who played with Tribes of Caïn until 2006 and worked for Cataract until he switched to Eluveitie . Also since late summer 2006 the band and drummer Inti Sanchez have gone their separate ways. The successors for Kay Brem and Inti Sanchez were bassist Dario Stutz and drummer Dave Schlumpf, who was replaced two years later by Lukas von Flueh.

After signing a contract with the Fastbeast Entertainment label, the third album Retaliation was released on November 1st, 2007 . The album was recorded in the band's own Artifier studios and mixed in the House of Audio (Karlsdorf). Peter in de Betou (Tailor Maid Production) was responsible for the mastering.

Texts

The texts deal with topics such as nature, humanity, own thoughts and stories of suffering. They are often written in English, rarely in German. Sometimes the texts take on poetic forms and show rhymes, alliterations and other literary stylistic figures.
