Midnattsol is a Norwegian-German folk metal band.

history

Midnattsol was founded in 2002 by Carmen Elise Espenæs and Christian Hector. Shortly afterwards Daniel Droste, Birgit Öllbrunner, Chris Merzinsky and Daniel Fischer joined them. In 2003 they released their first demo through which the Austrian label Napalm Records became aware of the band, which led to a recording contract. The band's debut album was released in 2004 under the name Where Twilight Dwells . The album promotion took place in spring 2005 as part of the “Burgen Tour” in the opening act for In Extremo . In 2005 Midnattsol performed at the “Feuertanz Festival”, the Summer Breeze , Wave-Gotik-Treffen and the Metal Female Voices Fest . In 2006, appearances followed at Mera Luna Festival , and one more time at the Metal Female Voices Fest in Belgium Wieze .

In September 2007, the recordings for the follow-up album Nordlys began , which was released on March 28, 2008. Shortly after the release, founding member Christian Hector left the band in May 2008 to focus on his Ahab project . He justified this with a lack of time and the musical development of Midnattsol. In September, a replacement for Hector was found in Fabian Pospiech.

In October 2009 Midnattsol won the “MFVF BEST HOPE AWARD” and at the same time announced the arrival of the new guitarist Alex Kautz. At the beginning of December of that year, guitarist Daniel Droste announced his departure from Midnattsol, as he, like Hector a year earlier, wanted to concentrate more on the band Ahab. In May 2010, Midnattsol first appeared at the Ragnarök Festival .

In July 2010 the band announced the completion of the recording work for their third album called "The Metamorphosis Melody", which was released on April 22, 2011. The album promotion took place as part of a tour together with Leaves' Eyes . During this tour, Matthias Schuler was announced as a new band member.

Carmen Elise Espenæs founded the Gothic Folk Metal band Savn in Bryne , Norway , in spring 2013 with the two The Sins Of Thy Beloved members Stig Johansen and Anders Thue .

style

Midnattsoll plays folk metal with clear symphonic metal elements . The songs are mostly composed in 6/8 time .

The lyrics occasionally tell traditional Norwegian sagas and legends, but they are often based only on these and are mostly fictitious. They are written by the singer Espenæs. Behind the stories there is usually a deeper meaning, so many personal experiences from the life of the singer are processed in them and the mythical creatures often only represent a metaphor for humans.

Carmen Elise Espenæs

Carmen Elise Espenæs (* 1983 in Stavanger) is the sister of Liv Kristine (formerly at Theater of Tragedy and Leaves' Eyes ). In 2003 she sang the guest vocals of the first Leaves' Eyes single Into your light . Shortly afterwards, she turned down the offer of the band Cradle of Filth to accompany them on their world tour and instead went into the studio with Midnattsol. In 2006 she sang a duet with her sister Liv Kristine at the M'era Luna Festival.

Penetralia

Penetralia is the forerunner from which Midnattsol later emerged. The band was founded in 1994 by Christopher Merzinsky and Daniel Droste. Other members were Christian Hector, Felix Gramling, Daniel Fischer and Bianca Eyermann. In the course of the band's history two demos (1996 "Black" and 1998 "Tribute To The Moon") were released.

The debut "Carpe Noctem - Legends Of Fullmoon Empires" was released in early 1999 via Last Episode . In 2000 the second and last album Seelenkrank was released . The guest singers were Gerhard “Felix” Stass ( Crematory ) and Clausi ( Blood ). The band broke up after their appearance at the Bretthart Festival.
