Trichomonas gallinae is a unicellular organism that carries a flag and is a parasite that primarilyattacks pigeons , but also other birds. While an infection in adult pigeons is often without symptoms, Trichomonas gallinae canalso cause fatal diseases in young animals and other bird species, which are known as trichomonas . The species was recognized as the cause of the greenfinch dying in Germany in 2009.

Trichomonas gallinae is an elongated, elliptical to pear-shaped single cell with dimensions of 5 to 19 by 2 to 9 µm. Like all Trichomonas species, it has four flagella pointing forwards and one dragging flagella pointing backwards, which is completely connected to the cell body by a membrane.
