Trichosirocalus troglodytes is aspecies of beetle from the family of weevils (Curculionidae).
features
The beetles are (without proboscis) 2.3–2.9 mm long. They are usually red-brown to dark brown in color with several whitish longitudinal stripes. Rows of bright, towering bristles run across the wing covers . The anterior tibia of the males have a thorn.
distribution
The species occurs in large parts of Europe. It is represented in the British Isles and Scandinavia . In Central Europe the species is considered not rare. In the south, the occurrence extends to western North Africa, in the east to the Middle East and Siberia .
Way of life
The wintering adults can be observed from mid-March. In spring, the females lay their eggs on ribwort ( Plantago lanceolata ). The hatched larvae bore into their host plant and develop in its stalk. The pupation takes place later in the soil. The new generation of adults will appear from July.
