The Trier vineyards are an eye-catcher

history

The location changed in 1371 from the possession of the noble family De Ponte to that of the monastery of St. Maria ad martyres , which was located opposite on the opposite bank. In the course of the secularization by Napoleon , the vineyard passed into the possession of the United Hospitia Foundation , to whose property it still belongs to this day as its oldest property. At the foot of the site, the vineyard is attached to the B53 by a retaining wall made of sandstone . Almost in the middle is a portal, dated 1784, to a cellar in the vineyard. According to legend, Margrave Albrecht II of Brandenburg-Kulmbach was only deterred from plundering the monastery in 1552 because he had tasted several cups of wine from the site. He found that the producers of so good a drop not pillaged should be, and spared the religious community. But he confiscated all the barrels of the wine.

Origin of name

Since the vineyard was exactly on the other side of the Moselle opposite the monastery, the monks could inspect their property at any time by looking out the window. From this the name of the location arose - ie "take a look at".

Others

Along the slope edge of the sandstone cliffs above the vineyard runs a section of the Trier rock path circular hiking trail , which allows a view from above of the eye as well as the city on the west bank of the river. On the edge of the vineyard there are caves that were created from the use of the sandstone cliffs as quarries. Until the mid-2000s there were some supposedly homeless people who called themselves hermits . They were forbidden to remain ex officio.
