history

The oldest recorded jersey exchange took place on May 14, 1931, when footballers of the French national team asked their opponents to give them their jerseys as souvenirs after a 5-2 victory over England . At first this was a one-off event.

The breakthrough in jersey swapping as a common ritual was the 1970 World Cup , when the Brazilian top star Pelé gave his jersey to his opponent Bobby Moore after Brazil had won 1-0. Then Moore Pelé handed over his jersey. This was auctioned in 2004 for 60,000 euros. In June 1998, the exchange of jerseys was temporarily banned by FIFA . This was justified with a possible offense.

Rules and procedure

The exchange of shirts between players takes place after the final whistle of a game and in men's football is often done on the pitch. On the one hand, this fulfills the concept of fair play ; on the other hand, many players are interested in securing the jerseys of top players. It is also considered an effective gesture towards viewers and the media. However, it is not without controversy, especially from a hygienic point of view. Because the jerseys are owned by the club, the exchange of clubs or associations is sometimes restricted or even prohibited.

In women's football , public swapping of shirts is not common, even if it is not generally prohibited. Therefore, a large part of the exchange campaigns take place in the non-public area around the cabins.
