The Trinitarios were founded in 1989 in the prisons of the US state of New York by Julio Mariñez alias "El Caballo" (1957-2010) and have since been on the streets. In New York City, the gang is represented in all five districts, as well as in New Jersey , Massachusetts , Pennsylvania , the Dominican Republic . According to the FBI , the gang is most active on the East Coast and in New England . The gang is currently said to have around 50,000 members. The gang, one of the most violent and fastest growing gangs in the United States, is involved in murder, aggravated assault, robbery, theft, break-ins and drug trafficking.

The Trinitarios-Prison-Gang was founded for the purpose of protection and against discrimination against Dominicans. They refer to themselves as a "family" or "nation for self-defense". The Trinitarios do not form alliances with other gangs. They have the slogan "Dios, Patria y Libertad" (German "God, Fatherland and Freedom"), which is in the coat of arms and in the center of the Dominican flag. They greet each other with "Patria" and usually wear green bandanas together with collars in the colors red, white and blue with green for identification. Their enemies and competitors include the American Mafia , Bloods , Crips , Dominicans Don't Play , Latin Kings and the Ñetas .
