Trinity Blood ( Japanese ト リ ニ テ ィ ・ ブ ラ ッ ド toriniti buraddo ) is an eleven-part light novel series by the Japanese writer Sunao Yoshida with illustrations by Thores Shibamoto . A manga series and an anime television series were created on the basis of these books .

action

The location of the "vampire bacillus" and the "Kresnik nanomachines" is a crashed alien spaceship on Mars, which suggests that it comes from another time and from another planet. The special abilities of the Kresniks include growing wings, creating a weapon from their own blood and other other skills, mostly specifically designed for the wearer (e.g. Abel can generate electricity at a megavolt level in his body). The most important factor, however, is that they have the appearance of vampires: sallow skin, red eyes and two sharp canine teeth. They feed on the blood of the "vampires" and are people who have been exposed to a virus that rewards and punishes them with all the advantages and disadvantages of vampirism. Kresniks are immortal. Vampires are the food of the Kresniks and are far inferior to them in their abilities and physical strength. A Kresnik therefore represents the most powerful being in the plot of the series.

The series takes place at an unspecified time in the future, roughly 500 years from now, after an apocalyptic war between all the nations of the world destroyed civilization. In this world of the future, the Catholic Church has become a major military power, whose goals include the protection of humanity from the vampiric Methuselea . Its seat is traditionally in the Vatican in Rome. The Methusalea are the second major military and political power. Their capital is Byzantium, or Istanbul, an elegant metropolis that is surrounded by a UV protective field to protect the local vampire population from the sun's rays. Both sides are at war with one another. They use "lost technology", holdovers of advanced technology from before the apocalyptic war. This includes airships, missiles, computers, and other things.

The Methusalea are people who have been infected by a virus that causes them to drink human blood. The virus causes an extension of the lifespan (they reach an age of 300 years, hence also "Methusalea"), superhuman strength, speed and wound healing. To do this, the virus destroys the host's red blood cells. When they are used up, the virus causes the host to crave blood and act like a vampire. Unlike the undead vampires of mythology, the Methusalea can reproduce and eat normal food.

The focus of the series is the clumsy Catholic priest Abel Nightroad. He works for the AX, a secret unit of the Vatican to control the vampires. In Istvan (Budapest) Abel meets the nun Esther Blanchett. He takes her to Rome and she also joins the AX. AX is headed by the Cardinal Duchess Catherina Sforza, the sister of the ruling Pope. She vehemently stands for peace with the vampire empire and the concept of coexistence between vampires and humans. She has known Abel for many years.

Publications

The novels appear in The Sneaker magazine , which also publishes Nagaru Tanigawa's Suzumiya Haruhi series. The Kadokawa-Shoten- Verlag publishes the chapters published in The Sneaker in book format. In the December 1999 issue a pilot episode of Trinity Blood appeared , from the April 2000 issue the work was continued as a series. The novel series consists of two parts - the six-book part Rage Against the Moons (often abbreviated to RAM ) and its six-book sequel, Reborn on the Mars ( ROM ). Although Rage Against the Moons takes place before Reborn on the Mars , the two parts can also be read independently.

Sunao Yoshida died in 2004 at the age of 34 and was therefore unable to finish his work. The sixth volume of Rage Against the Moons and the seventh of Reborn on the Mars remained unfinished.

The Panini Verlag published novels in Germany. Since March 2007 three volumes have been published in German. Tokyopop has been publishing the novels in English since April 2007.

Adaptations

The series of novels has gained additional fame through its implementation as a manga and anime series. Both differ in some cases considerably from their original.

Manga

After the series of novels and the associated character design by Thores Shibamoto, the illustrator Kiyo Kyūjō ( 九 条 キ ヨ , Kyūjō Kiyo ) designed a manga series for the manga magazine Asuka from 2003 . The Asuka magazine aimed primarily at adolescent girls, which is why the comic implementation of Shōjo can be assigned genus of. The series was completed in April 2018. Kadokawa Shoten brought out the individual chapters of Trinity Blood published in Asuka in 21 anthologies. In the summer of 2010, work on the manga was initially discontinued, as other projects of the artist have priority.

From July 2006 to June 2019 Panini published the anthologies in German on the Planet Manga label . The last two volumes appeared together as a double volume. Tokyopop publishes the manga series in English in North America.

Anime

The Kadokawa-Shoten-Verlag wanted to add an anime series to the Trinity Blood universe after the implementation as a manga series. That's why the publisher approached the animation studio GONZO and director Tomohiro Hirata . In March 2004, Hirata and screenwriter Atsuhiro Tomioka met with Sunao Yoshida to discuss ideas for the anime. The character design based on the templates by Thores Shibamoto was carried out by Tomohiro Hirata's wife Atsuko Nakajima . The costumes are influenced by the Gothic Lolita fashion style popular in Japan . GONZO produced 24 episodes with a running time of around 24 minutes each.

From April 28 to October 27, 2005, the Japanese TV station WOWOW broadcast the anime series. The anime also appeared in North America, Italy, Spain, Peru, Malaysia and Germany, among others. In Germany, OVA Films released the series from August 2006 to July 2007 on six DVDs. The station Animax has been broadcasting the series in German since September 26, 2008. On August 28th, nipponart released a Collector's Edition of the anime on Blu-ray and DVD.
