The Trinity Buoy Wharf in the Borough of Tower Hamlets is the site of London 's only lighthouse . It is located at the confluence of the Thames and Bow Creek , in the Leamouth area . The lighthouse is no longer in use, it is known as the Bow Creek Lighthouse .

history

In 1803, The Elder Brethren of Trinity House began using the site. It was a warehouse for materials and a warehouse for the barrels that were used in the Thames; the quay served as a pier and repair area for lightships . The bank reinforcement was built in 1822.

The original lighthouse was built by James Walker in 1852. It was demolished in the late 1920s. The lighthouse still standing today was built by James Nicholas Douglass from 1864 to 1866. It was used for testing and training lighthouse keepers in England and Wales. Michael Faraday made experiments on the electrical lighting of lighthouses at this location.

Since the late 20th century

In December 1988 Trinity House closed the facility and it was bought by the London Docklands Development Corporation . The beacon has been dismantled and is on display in the Lighthouse Museum at Hurst Point. In 1998 Urban Space Holdings Ltd took over the long-term lease for the site. The quay area is now used as a center for art and culture. It offers artist studios and exhibition space.

Urban Space Holdings started 'Container City' in 2001 to build an artist studio and office complex out of old shipping containers .

In 2005, the University of East London opened two artist studios on the site and in 2009 two dance studios.
