Josef Horak

Josef Horak (born January 2, 1898 in Vienna , † December 8, 1978 there ) was an Austrian politician ( SPÖ ) and union secretary. From 1954 to 1956 he was regional councilor in the Salzburg regional government .

Horak attended elementary school in Vienna between 1904 and 1909 and then attended a humanistic grammar school in Vienna and Wiener Neustadt from 1909 to 1916 . He then worked from 1916 to 1918 as a civil law clerk in the kk outfit depot in Kaiserebersdorf and was subsequently employed as a registrar in a petroleum company in Vienna until 1919. After working as an unskilled worker at a paving company and as an assistant at the post office in Vienna, he moved to Salzburg in 1919, where he first worked as a clerk in a bookstore and then from 1919 to 1921 as an office worker. Eventually he became an accountant for the general consumer cooperative, for which he worked from 1921 to 1927. He then worked from 1927 to 1934 as secretary of the Central Association of Commercial Employees, but was dismissed in February 1934 as a result of the Austrian civil war . As early as May 1934 he was reinstated in the service of the Salzburg Chamber of Labor, whereupon he was employed from 1934 to 1938 as a secretary for the workers in the restaurant and bar industry as well as for the food and luxury goods industry. After the National Socialists came to power in 1938, he was dismissed again, so that he worked as an accountant and head of a publishing company until 1945. In addition, he had to do his military service in World War II from 1943 to 1945. After returning from the war, Horak worked from 1946 to 1954 as state secretary of the ÖGB Salzburg, after which he was chairman of the Salzburg state executive of the Austrian Federation of Trade Unions from 1956 to 1966. Horak crowned his professional career in 1956 with his appointment as President of the Salzburg Chamber of Labor, where he was active until 1966.

Politics and functions

Horak joined the Social Democratic Party in 1919 and became a member of the Free Trade Union in 1921. From 1924 he was involved as deputy chairman and from 1926 as chairman of the Central Association of Commercial Employees. He was also active as a member of the Salzburg Chamber of Labor from 1926 and was appointed to the executive board of the salaried employees' insurance fund in 1927. After the Second World War he was a member of the board of the Salzburg Chamber of Labor from 1946 to 1956 and chairman of the Salzburg Regional Health Insurance Fund from 1948 to 1963. In addition, he was active within the party from 1956 to 1966 as a member of the state party executive of the SPÖ Salzburg and from December 11, 1954 to January 31, 1956 as a member of the Salzburg state government as a regional councilor. Horak was also president of ASKÖ Salzburg from 1956 to 1965 . 1958 Great Silver Medal of Honor for Services to the Republic of Austria, 1963 Coat of Arms of the City of Salzburg, 1967 Great Medal of Honor of the State of Salzburg.
