Triphosphoric acid is an inorganic chemical compound from the group of polyphosphoric acids . The triphosphates are derived from it. In addition to this chain-like triphosphoric acid (more precisely catena-triphosphoric acid), a cyclic form (cyclo-triphosphoric acid or trimetaphosphoric acid) is also known, but has a different empirical formula.

Occurrence

Triphosphoric acid derivatives such as adenosine triphosphoric acid play an important role in metabolism.

properties

Triphosphoric acid is not known in crystalline form. The liquid with this composition which can be obtained by thermal dehydration of phosphoric acid or by heating phosphorus pentoxide with phosphoric acid is an equilibrium mixture of H 3 PO 4 , H 4 P 2 O 7 , H 5 P 3 O 10 and higher polyphosphoric acids. An aqueous solution can also be obtained by hydrolysis of trimetaphosphoric acid or tetrametaphosphoric acid.

The sodium salt of triphosphoric acid ( pentasodium triphosphate ) is used as a complexing agent.
