William Armand Thomas Tristan Garel-Jones, Baron Garel-Jones , PC (born February 28, 1941 in Gorseinon , Wales - † March 23, 2020 ) was a British politician . As a member of the Conservative Party , he was an MP for the Watford constituency from 1979 to 1997 and was promoted to Life Peer in 1997 .

Family and title

Garel-Jones was born to Bernard Garel-Jones and his wife Meriel Williams. He had been married to Catalina Garrigues from Madrid since 1966 and had a daughter and four sons. On August 2, 1997, he was raised to the nobility as Baron Garel-Jones of Watford , of Watford in the County of Hertfordshire.

Education and political career

Garel-Jones received his training at the King's School in Canterbury and the Escuela Oficial de Idiomas in Madrid. Between 1970 and 1974 he worked as a banker before turning to political work. Between 1974 and 1979 he was employed by the Conservative Party, from 1978 to 1979 as assistant to the party chairwoman Margaret Thatcher . In the 1979 general election , Garel-Jones prevailed in the Waterford constituency . After entering Parliament, he was Whip and Junior Minister in the Foreign and Commonwealth Departments . He was Vice-Chamberlain of the Household (1986–1988), Comptroller of the Household (1989–1990), Treasurer of the Household (1989–1990), Minister for Europe (1990–1993).

Garel-Jones was a supporter of the British Humanist Association and vice chairman of the All-Party Parliamentary Humanist Group.
