characters

The most important characters in the series are briefly described below:

Tristan Irle

Tristan Irle is the title character of the novels. He is described as being in his forties, wearing sweaters and smoking a pipe. His residence, a half-timbered house, is in the old town of Siegen, opposite the Marienkirche. Tristan Irle lives there with Marlowe, his cockatoo.

Chief Inspector Norbert Pfeiffer

Chief Inspector Norbert Pfeiffer and his colleague Werner Holzbaum belong to the Hagen homicide squad. He's a smoker, notorious speedster and doesn't particularly appreciate Tristan Irle. Nevertheless, he would not have been able to solve many of his cases without Tristan Irles' help, which secretly annoys him.

Commissioner Werner Holzbaum

Commissioner Werner Holzbaum is Pfeiffer's colleague and much calmer than him. He grew up on a farm and does not make judgments as hastily as Pfeiffer. Unlike Pfeiffer, he also likes Tristan and his cockatoo.

Young Commissioner Arne Affolderbach

Arne Affolderbach is a young colleague of Pfeiffer and Holzbaum and was born and raised in Siegerland. In contrast to Pfeiffer, he also likes to work with new media. This character first appeared in Volume 21.

Helga Bottenberg

Helga Bottenberg is Tristan's partner and owns a small guesthouse in the Ginsberger Heide. He gets to know her in volume 3 Mord Pur. In most novels, however, it appears more marginally and does not help in solving the murder cases.

Erich Roth

Erich Roth is a deacon of the Marienkirche and Tristan's best friend. He's helped Tristan on some of his cases.

Marlowe

Marlowe is Tristan's cockatoo and his best friend. Tristan got him as a young bird and has lived with him ever since. He taught Marlowe a few sayings from German poets, which the latter can use in the most unsuitable situations.
