Tritan is the trade name for a plastic .

It is a thermoplastic polyester from the US manufacturer Eastman Chemical , which is used, for example, for drinking bottles. The plastic was introduced in 2007. The fact that the material is harmless for food purposes as shown in the advertising because it does not contain bisphenol A , a hormone-active substance common in plastics technology , is controversial.

The substance is made from dimethyl terephthalate , 2,2,4,4-tetramethyl-1,3-cyclobutanediol and 1,4-cyclohexanedimethanol .

Certain additives or contaminants in Tritan can migrate into the water. These substances include 2-phenoxyethanol (CAS 122-99-6), dimethyl isophthalate (CAS 1459-93-4), 4- nonylphenol (CAS 104-40-5), bisphenol A (CAS 80-05-7) and benzyl butyl phthalate ( CAS 85-68-7), but in concentrations that are well below the legal threshold values.
