Benzyl butyl phthalate is an organic chemical compound from the group of phthalates ( esters of phthalic acid ) that was mainly used as a plasticizer for PVC . It is a colorless, almost odorless, oily liquid.

Extraction and presentation

Benzyl butyl phthalate is produced by reacting the monobutyl ester of phthalic acid with benzyl chloride .

properties

Physical Properties

Benzyl butyl phthalate has a viscosity of 62 mPa · s at 20 ° C. Benzyl butyl phthalate vapors are eleven times heavier than air.

Chemical properties

Benzyl butyl phthalate is the only industrially significant phthalate with different side chains , one of which is a benzyl group .

use

Benzyl butyl phthalate is used as an external plasticizer for polyvinyl and cellulosic thermoplastics, polysulfide , polyurethane , ethyl cellulose and polyvinyl acetate emulsion adhesives . End products are e.g. B. PVC-based floor coverings, surface coatings (e.g. for automobiles), packaging materials, adhesives and electrical installation materials.

safety instructions

In animal experiments at high doses, BBP can impair fertility and the development of the offspring in the womb and was therefore classified by the EU in the group of substances hazardous to reproduction in 2005. It is already forbidden to use BBP in toys and baby articles because the substance is listed in Appendix 1 of the Consumer Goods Ordinance .

On March 31, 2015, with Directive (EU) 2015/863, benzyl butyl phthalate was added to the RoHS substance list. As of July 22, 2019, electrical and electronic equipment containing parts with more than 0.1% by weight BBP in the homogeneous material may no longer be sold in the EU.

proof

Benzyl butyl phthalate can be detected by chromatographic methods (gas or liquid methods) or mass spectrometry .
