description

Location San Augustine on the historic El Camino Real de los Tejas road (top right)

The Ayish Bayou is the central running water of San Augustine County. The - in character more like a stream similar - River rises in the north of the San Augustine County, near the border with neighboring Shelby County , flows through the county in north-south direction and ends after about 51 kilometers into the Sam Rayburn Reservoir. Before the reservoir was completed in 1965, the course of the river was a good deal longer at 75 kilometers. Until then, the lower reaches of the border with Jasper County in the south, where it flowed directly into the Angelina River. The average altitude is 50 meters above sea level. The banks of the stream are heavily forested ; the predominant flora are pine and hardwood trees . The surrounding terrain is flat to slightly hilly. The loamy soil is suitable for both agricultural and forestry purposes.

By far the largest settlement on the river is the district capital San Augustine. The next river to the west is the Attoyac Bayou , which runs along the border with Nacogdoches County . The next big river to the east is the Sabine River , which marks the border between the US states of Texas and Louisiana . In a west-east direction, the Ayish Bayou is passed by two important connecting roads: the State Highway 21, which runs through San Augustine, and the Farm-to-Market-Road 83, which the river immediately below its confluence with the Sam Rayburn Reservoir happens.

Historically, the area around the river bank was the earliest region in which Anglo-Saxon settlers from the USA settled permanently. Local settlement began here as early as the late 1810s. In 1826/27 the small settlement was the scene of a brief uprising against Mexican rule - the so-called Fredonian Rebellion . In 1834 the settlements in the river valley were constituted as an independent communal unit with the center of San Augustine - the forerunner of San Augustine County, which was founded after the Texan War of Independence . An advantageous factor in the early development phase was the location on El Camino Real de los Tejas - a highway leading via San Augustine, Nacogdoches and San Antonio and also known as the Old San Antonio Road , which connects (US) Louisiana with the today’s northern Mexican province of Coahuila .

Like East Texas as a whole, the region around the Ayish Bayou is also strongly characterized by timber mining and agriculture with a focus on dairy farming and chicken farming. The landscape of the former lower course of the river has changed significantly - today a branch of the Sam Rayburn Reservoir. The damming had ecologically detrimental effects primarily on the water quality . The East Texas water protection authority Angelina & Neches River Authority has consistently pointed out bacteria- caused impairments since the first measurement in 2000 . Due to the proximity to the Sam Rayburn reservoir and the Angelina National Forest to the west of the river mouth, nature , water sports and recreational tourism also play a not insignificant role in the region. A central point of contact is the San Augustine Civic and Tourism Center on the upper reaches of the river. Although the river has at this level for only an average width of three meters, the banks of both vegetable and by the-present here species of birds - including Northern Cardinal , Mockingbird , American cliff swallow and Indianermeise to red-tailed hawk and black vultures - an above-average species width.
