Tritropidia is a genus of humpback chirps of which five species are known so far. The species are known from northern South America: Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Guyana and Suriname. All known species occur in Colombia.

features

These humpback chirps are relatively small, 2.5 to 5 millimeters long, often conspicuously patterned with yellow, red or brown markings, but sometimes also largely black. The pronotum has a narrow, forward-pointing horn that can also be absent in males. Dorsolaterally there are narrow elevations on the pronotum. The males are usually smaller than the females.

Way of life

The representatives of the genus Tritropidia often occur in groups. They lay eggs in the plant tissue and cover the clutch with a brown, scaly, waxy substance and then sit on it. Like all humpback leafhoppers, they suck plant sap ; in Brazil they were found on cocoa plants , among other things . Sometimes they are associated with ants.
