trivago is a hotel metasearch on the internet. There, the prices of hotels, hostels or “ bed and breakfast ” accommodations can be compared. According to its own information, the website searches the prices of more than one million hotels worldwide from over 250 booking sites (e.g. Expedia or Booking.com ). The company generates its profits with a pay-per-click model and was the first hotel meta search engine in Germany. Trivago is a subsidiary of Expedia.
history
The company was founded by Rolf Schrömgens, Stephan Stubner and Peter Vinnemeier in June 2005 in Düsseldorf- Flingern , graduates of the HHL Leipzig Graduate School of Management . A year later Stubner got out, whose position was then filled by Malte Siewert. From 2007 the German company began to expand in Europe. North and South America followed in 2009. In 2013 the company was finally represented in the Asia-Pacific market. Today the company offers more than fifty country platforms. In the summer of 2016, the management team was expanded to include HHL graduate Axel Hefer, who was entrusted with the IPO as CFO.
In December 2012, Expedia announced the purchase of the majority of trivago (61.6 percent of the shares for 477 million euros). Based on the agreed takeover price, this results in a valuation of 774 million euros for the entire company.
In November 2016, the company announced the IPO on the US technology exchange NASDAQ . At this point in time, the company, with over 1,000 employees, had sales of $ 435 million for the first nine months of fiscal year. Initial valuation estimates are in the $ 5 billion range. The listed parent company operates as trivago NV
The company also announced the new construction of the trivago campus in Düsseldorf in 2016. The latter was completed in June 2018 and today forms the global corporate headquarters, where over 1,200 people from more than 50 nations work. The company's own employees contributed to the design of the six-story building.
From July 2017 to the end of June 2018, trivago was the main sponsor of the soccer club VfL Bochum .
Community
The site was co-designed by a community . Countries were categorized and hotels and excursion destinations were created. Collected were supplemented Geo data, Web links, images and reviews. So-called community administrators had fixed tasks on each country site. This includes checking the authenticity of the reviews posted and monitoring the import of new hotel partners for the metasearch. Direct reviews were discontinued and the community principle abandoned in favor of freelancers .
