Outerbridge Crossing is a cantilever bridge that connects the New York borough of Staten Island with New Jersey . In addition to the Bayonne and Goethals Bridge , it is one of three road links from Staten Island to New Jersey and provides the connection between the New Jersey Turnpike (I 95) and the Garden State Parkway in New Jersey and the West Shore Expressway on Staten Island. Outerbridge Crossing is operated by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey , which charges a cash toll of currently US $ 15 for cars; if the electronic toll system Ez-Pass is used, the tariff is reduced.
Outerbridge Crossing is named after Eugenius H. Outerbridge, the first chairman of the Port Authority. The bridge was one of the Port Authority's first projects and was opened to traffic on June 29, 1929, on the same day as the almost identical Goethals Bridge, located further north. It is 2,682 m long and crosses the Arthur Kill , a strait that separates Staten Island from the mainland and an important gateway to New York Harbor, at a height of 43.6 m. The bridge has four lanes and was used by 30,232,000 vehicles in 2008.
