Location dry port of Athus

The dry port of Athus is a dry port in the south of Wallonia , in Athus a district of Aubange on the border triangle with France and Luxembourg. It takes over freight from the ports of Zeebrugge , Antwerp and Rotterdam and transports them to the greater region of Saarland, Lorraine and the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg (Saar-Lor-Lux). It is the largest dry port in Belgium .

history

The project started in the province of Luxembourg at the end of the 1970s, after the steel industry crisis, to revive the weakened economy in the region. In fact, the dry port is now the largest in Belgium and covers more than 300 km² of hinterland. Containers entering or leaving the sea are handled here even though the waters are far away from the three borders.

location

Due to its central location in the European trading center, Belgium has one of the world's densest infrastructure networks. The Logistics Performance Index, compiled by the World Bank, shows that Belgium ranked 3rd out of 160 countries in 2018. The parameters for international shipping and the logistical time required did particularly well.

The terminal has a continuous rail connection with the Belgian coast, which is served by three trains to and fro every day. These transport around 320 containers on each journey, while around 120 trucks ensure the road connection between the terminal and the hinterland. The terminal has at least 160,000 m² of usable space on site.

In 2018, the multimodal combination of rail and road transported more than 46,500 sea containers by TCA towards the North Sea ports or in the greater Saar-Lor-Lux region. The Belgian infrastructure company Infrabel is currently building direct electrified access to the French rail network, which is due to be completed in August 2020.

An increase in the railroad's share of the modal split from 7 to 15% is planned by 2030. These plans were recently announced by the Port of Antwerp , Railport Antwerp and the infrastructure operator Infrabel.
