The Trojan ( Armored Vehicle Royal Engineers - AVRE ) is a mine-clearance vehicle for the British Army . Its main task is clearing or breaking through minefields. However, the vehicle can also be used for other pioneering tasks. It is used by the Royal Engineers.

description

The Trojan uses Challenger 2 pan and drive . Instead of the tower, it carries a hydraulic excavator arm for earthmoving, with which the fascine bundle that is carried on the engine cover plate can also be used. In the operational area, the side protection can be reinforced with armored chain aprons. This increases the vehicle width by 70 centimeters.

At the front there is a mine plow that is used to either detonate land mines or toss them aside, creating a safe alley for vehicles following behind. As a second option, the tank can track a trailer equipped with the Python Minefield Breaching System , a rocket-propelled explosive hose. The hose filled with explosives is thrown over the minefield and explodes if it touches the surface of the ground. This creates a seven meter wide and 230 meter long mine lane.

For self- defense , the tank is equipped with a remote-controlled machine gun in the 7.62 × 51 mm NATO caliber .

The vehicle was built at BAE Systems in Newcastle upon Tyne . The contract was signed with Vickers Defense Systems in 2001 , but this company was sold to BAE Systems in 2004. A total of 33 vehicles were produced.

The vehicle was first used in training in 2007 with the 1st Mechanized Battalion of the Duke of Lancaster's Regiment.

A number of the vehicles are permanently stationed at the British Army Training Unit Suffield in Canada for training purposes.

In 2009 the first tanks were relocated to Afghanistan, where they were first used in 2010. During "Operation Moshtarak" the 28th Engineer Regiment first used the Trojan as part of a British offensive.
