The Knooppunt Joure is a motorway junction in the Dutch province of Friesland in the south of the city of Joure . It connects Rijksweg 6 (A6: Muiderberg - Lelystad - Emmeloord –Joure) with Rijksweg 7 (A7: Zaandam - Den Oever - Heerenveen - Groningen ).

The knot is named after the town of Joure , about 6 kilometers west of Heerenveen , which is north of the cross.

history

The Knooppunt Joure in 2000

The first road in the area of the cross was built as early as June 1940 and extended to Heerenveen in December 1950 . At that time there was only one normal intersection in the area of today's node. In 1959 it was decided to build a motorway between Joure and Lemmer , which was completed on June 20, 1973 as the A50 , together with the Knooppunt Joure as a roundabout. In 1975 the road, which branches off to the east from the junction, was expanded to four lanes between Joure and Heerenveen and opened to traffic on November 19. Four years later, the motorway west of the cross between Sneek and Joure was completed on July 29, 1979. So the junction was now a complete motorway junction .

In 1979 the Knooppunt Joure was still a roundabout with three lanes and a fourth entry or exit lane was added in some cases. However, since accidents often occurred due to the not very simple traffic routing, the traffic routing was often changed in the following years. In 1983 the roundabout was narrowed to two lanes, but this did not bring the hoped-for success. Thus the roundabout became three lanes again in 1990. In 2000, the node was supplemented by a few connection ramps. There is no need to enter the roundabout from Emmeloord towards Heerenveen, from Sneek towards Emmeloord and from Heerenveen towards Joure.

In the following years the problems around the Knooppunt Joure persisted, and there was also the fact that the traffic increased more and more and there were more and more traffic jams, especially from the direction of Sneek. For this reason it was decided in 2003 to find a definitive solution for the knot. The project was then awarded in June 2015, so that the first work on the new motorway triangle could begin in November 2015. Construction officially began on January 22, 2016.

The Knooppunt Joure until 2017

Until October 2017, the Knooppunt Joure was a three-lane roundabout with additional external direct connecting ramps from Emmeloord to Heerenveen, from Sneek to Emmeloord and from Heerenveen to Joure. The A6 ended on the south side of the roundabout, on the west side the A7 towards Sneek and Amsterdam was connected, on the east side the A7 towards Heerenveen and Groningen . In the north there was a connection to the Geert Knolweg , which led to the center of Joure. The center of the 250 m diameter roundabout was greened with trees . The inflow was not regulated by traffic lights at any of the entrances . All entrances were two-lane, but the A7 from the west and the A6 from the south were narrowed to one lane before the junction and only became two-lane again immediately before the roundabout. Before the junction, the motorways became a motorway . In front of and in the roundabout, the maximum speed limit was 50 km / h.

A triangular motorway triangle (half a Maltese cross) was built on the A6 south of the former roundabout by October 13, 2017. The A7 from Heerenveen has since merged directly with the A6 from Emmeloord. To get from the A7 in the direction of Heerenveen to the A7 in the direction of Sneek, the lane has to be changed. During the planning, great importance was attached to the fact that the junction could be driven through at up to 130 km / h.

Design

The Knooppunt, which has been open to traffic since October 2017 , has been implemented in a triangular shape (half a Maltese cross). The A7 does not form the continuous carriageway, but the A7 towards Heerenveen and Groningen changes into the A6 towards Emmeloord. The northern ramp allows you to get from the A7 from Heerenveen and Groningen to the A7 towards Sneek and Amsterdam. All transfer ramps are single-lane and have a hard shoulder. Both the A6 and the A7 have four lanes in a triangle.
