The Knooppunt Lunetten is a motorway junction in the Dutch province of Utrecht in the south-east of the city of Utrecht . It connects Rijksweg 12 (A12: Oberhausen - Arnhem –Utrecht– The Hague ) with Rijksweg 27 (A27: Almere - Hilversum –Utrecht- Breda ).

The motorway junction is named after the Utrecht district of Lunetten, northwest of the junction. The Lunetten district takes its name from the Lunetten fortress, which was part of the Dutch water line .

history

Construction of the motorway junction began as early as 1968. However, the node was only opened 13 years later on June 24, 1981 with the completion of the A27 between Lexmond and Lunetten. Until the completion of the A27 section east of Utrecht on October 29, 1986, the junction was a motorway triangle . Since then, the node has existed in its current design.

Between 1995 and 1997 the A12 was expanded to six lanes in and to the west of the junction, and eight lanes when the hard shoulder was released. In 2005 a speed limit of 80 and 100 km / h was introduced on the route. In some cases, a traffic control system was also installed. At the beginning of 2011, the section east of the junction was completely expanded to eight lanes with the help of the preparatory work already done in 1997.

Design

The motorway junction has the shape of a clover leaf with a direct connecting ramp , similar to the Knooppunt Oudenrijn west of Utrecht . With the exception of the connecting ramp from west to north, all connecting ramps are arranged like a clover-leaf motorway junction. To the west of the junction there is a network of lanes so that road users can access both the parallel lane, which is intended for regional traffic, and the main lane. In this area, the A12 has two lanes on the parallel lane in each direction and three lanes in each direction on the main lane.

To the east of the junction, the A12 has 2 × 4 lanes. The A27 has six lanes to the north and four to the south to the north of the interchange, and four lanes to the south and three to the north to the south of the junction.
