The Knooppunt Grijsoord is a motorway triangle in the Dutch province of Gelderland in the west of the city of Arnhem . It connects Rijksweg 12 (A12: Oberhausen –Arnhem– Utrecht - The Hague ) with Rijksweg 50 (A50: Zwolle - Apeldoorn –Arnhem– Eindhoven ).

The motorway triangle is named after a farm that was used as a holiday camp for sick children from the beginning of the 20th century. The farmhouse was located near the connecting ramp between Eindhoven and Arnhem, where there is still an old asphalt road today.

history

The Knooppunt Knooppunt Grijsoord in 1984 - aerial view

As early as 1962, the plans for a motorway route between the Renkum and the Knooppunt Grijsoord were presented. In 1968 the construction of the line began and in 1970 the construction of the motorway triangle. With the completion of the route of the A50 between Knooppunt Valburg and Knooppunt Grijsoord on August 30, 1972, the motorway triangle was opened to traffic.

The generous design, such. B. the wide separation of lanes in the area of the motorway triangle or the management of the connecting ramps , is due to the plans for an expansion to the north. Thus, the node in the area of today's course should north N310 of the Rijksweg 30 to A1 arise that should be connected to the hub. These plans were rejected when Rijksweg 30 was realized a little further west near Barneveld .

Around 1989 the A12 / A50 was expanded to six lanes east of Knooppunt Grijsoord to Knooppunt Waterberg . From 2010 until April 22, 2011, the A50 between Knooppunt Valburg and Knooppunt Grijsoord was also expanded to six lanes.

Design

The motorway triangle is built in the shape of a trumpet and connects the A12, the most important east-west connection in the Netherlands, with the A50. To the east of the junction, the A12 runs together with the A50 to Knooppunt Waterberg. The connecting ramps south-east and east-south, i.e. those between the A50 and the section of the A12 in which it runs together with the A50, are each two-lane. The remaining ramps are each developed with one lane, whereby an extension without complications would be possible due to the generous design. The overpass of the ramp from south to west is designed for a two-lane ramp, but there is currently only one single-lane ramp.
