The Knooppunt Velperbroek is a motorway junction in the Dutch province of Gelderland in the east of the city of Arnhem ( Dutch Arnhem ). It connects Rijksweg 12 (A12: Oberhausen –Arnhem– Utrecht - The Hague ), Provinciale Weg 348 (A348 towards Zutphen ) and Provinciale Weg 325 (A325 towards Arnhem, Nijmegen ).

The motorway junction is named after the Arnhem district of Velp , in which it is located. In Dutch, a broek describes a depression in which the groundwater is usually located. Due to its low location, the motorway junction was called Velperbroek accordingly.

history

The Knooppunt Knooppunt Velperbroek in 1996 - aerial view

The roundabout was opened to traffic on March 8, 1961 with the completion of the A12 between Arnhem-Noord and Knooppunt Velperbroek. At that time, the four-lane A12 ended there until a month later, on April 18, 1961, the two-lane A12 was opened to the German border. On April 6, 1964 the remaining two lanes east of the motorway junction up to the border were completed.

On June 9, 1964, Rijksweg 48 (today Provinciale Weg 348 ) was connected to the Knooppunt.

Until the restructuring of the Dutch trunk road network in the 1990s, Rijkswege 12, 48 and 52 were connected to the roundabout. Rijksweg 48 (A48) is known today as Provinciale Weg 348 (A348) and Rijksweg 52 (A52) as Provinciale Weg 325 (N325).

By December 1986, a flyover of the A12 was built in Knooppunt Velperbroek with the help of two bridges, so that the traffic on the A12 can flow freely. Between 2011 and 2012 the A12 between Velperbroek and the Knooppunt Waterberg was expanded to six lanes.

Design

The motorway junction is built as a roundabout, with the A12 being passed over the roundabout without any intersections using an overpass. It has 5 entrances and exits; In addition to the two to the A12 and one each to the A348 and N325, there is also one to the President Kennedylaan , which leads to Velp.

The roundabout has been expanded to three lanes throughout. The traffic is regulated by 5 traffic lights in the roundabout and one at each entrance.
