The Knooppunt Zaandam is a motorway junction in the Dutch province of North Holland in the northeast of Zaandam . It connects Rijksweg 7 (A7: Zaandam– Den Oever - Heerenveen - Groningen ) with Rijksweg 8 (A8: Amsterdam –Zaandam– Beverwijk ).

The knot is named after the city of Zaandam , which has 73,000 inhabitants , about 10 kilometers north of Amsterdam, in the northwest of which the cross is located.

history

The Knooppunt Zaandam was finally opened to traffic in 1970 with the completion of the A7 between Zaandam and Zaandijk.

A provincial road between Zaandam and Purmerend had already been built in 1935 in the area of ​​today's motorway junction , where it crossed the A8, which was completed in February 1968 (towards Oostzaan ) and February 1969 (towards Zaandijk).

Between 1987 and 1990 the A8 was expanded to six lanes from Knooppunt Zaandam to Knooppunt Coenplein . In 1997, another lane was added towards Amsterdam and the semi-direct ramp was built in the cross. In addition, in December 2007 an additional lane was built on the A7 between Purmerend- Zuid and the Knooppunt Zaandam, which is released in the event of overload. In December 2015, this was supplemented by a lane in the opposite direction and another direction Zaandam.

Design

The motorway junction is mainly built in the clover shape, but has a connecting ramp similar to a turbine, which represents the connection from Purmerend towards Amsterdam. The connecting ramps from Purmerend to Amsterdam and vice versa are each two-lane, all others are single-lane.

The A8 has eight lanes between Knooppunt Zaandam and Knooppunt Coenplein, and four lanes in the other direction. The A7 below has also been expanded to four lanes, but each has a relief lane.
