Trumpet ears ( Phoniscus ) are a bat genus in the smooth-nosed family with four species that occur in Southeast Asia and the Australis region . They were classified in the genus of woolly bats ( Kerivoula ) until the 1990s .

Like woolly bats, the species have a woolly fur. It is formed from four-colored hair on the top, with the tips of the hair being light. It is also characterized by a whitish tragus in the ear with a notch on the back. The outer upper incisors are only a quarter of the length of the inner incisors. In addition, there are grooves on the canine teeth.
Types and distribution
The following species belong to the genus.
- Doubtful trumpet ear ( Phoniscus aerosa ), probably lives in Asia, the holotype was incorrectly labeled "from South Africa".
- Furrow-tooth trumpet- ear ( Phoniscus atrox ), occurs on the Malay Peninsula , Borneo and Sumatra .
- Peters Trumpet Ear ( Phoniscus jagorii ), inhabits mainland Southeast Asia, the Philippines and Indonesian islands.
- Papuan trumpet ear ( Phoniscus papuensis ), is common in New Guinea and northern Australia .
