The Tschirkei dam or " Tschirkeiskaja dam" ( Russian Чиркейская ГЭС / Tschirkeiskaja GES ) on the Sulak river in Dagestan is the second highest dam in Russia , the fifth largest in the CIS and one of the 20 highest in the world.
The dam is a 232.5 m high and 333 m long arch dam and was built from 1974 to around 1977. The construction period is also given as 1964 to 1978. The dam is used to generate electricity and has a total of 1000 MW with four turbines of 250 MW each. The operating company is called Dagenergo.
The dam was named after the village of Tschirkei above the dam on the river . When the reservoir was filled , it was flooded, as was the Druzhba urban-type settlement created for the builders of the power plant , but in contrast to the latter, it was rebuilt at a higher point, about four kilometers to the east. In addition to Tschirkei, there are four other hydropower plants in the Sulak river system: Gergebil (Gergebilskaja), Tschirjurt (Tschirjurtowskije, a complex of three dams), Miatli (Miatlinskaja) and Irganai (Irganaiskaja).
