Tshelpa monastery
The monastery Tshelpa ( Tib .: tshal pa ) also Yanggön (Tib .: yang dgon ) is located in the area of Lhasa in Tibet , about 10 kilometers east of downtown Lhasa in the municipality of Tshelgungthang on the southern bank of the Lhasa He ( tshal gung thang ) from Chengguan . It was originally a monastery of the Kagyu School and was later attached to the Gelug School.
It is the founding monastery of the Tshelpa Kagyu School ( Tib .: tshal pa bka 'brgyud pa ), one of the four major branches of the Kagyu school direction ( Barom , Karma- , Phagdru, and Tshelpa Kagyu) of Tibetan Buddhism , the divided into four main schools ( Nyingma , Kagyü, Sakya and Gelug ).
The locals call it "Yanggön Monastery".
It was founded in 1175 by the charismatic founder of the Tshelpa Kagyü school Lama Shang ( bla ma zhang ), who is also the founder of the Tshel Gungthang monastery, which was founded in 1187 near Lhasa .
The Tshelpa Monastery was later destroyed, the monastery seen today was rebuilt in the early 1950s, the current temple is much smaller than the original.
